Postnatal care is a critical component of maternal health services, aimed at monitoring the well-being of both mother and child following childbirth. This care involves early detection and management of potential complications, promoting breastfeeding, family planning, and maternal mental health (World Health Organization, 2024). However, in many regions of Nigeria, including Bauchi State, access to timely and effective postnatal care remains a significant challenge due to inadequate healthcare personnel, logistical constraints, and limited awareness among new mothers (Aliyu & Usman, 2023).
Nurse practitioners (NPs) have increasingly been integrated into postnatal care services to help address these gaps. With their advanced training, NPs are well-positioned to perform routine postnatal assessments, counsel mothers on infant care and family planning, and provide mental health support (Bello et al., 2023). Studies have shown that the involvement of NPs in postnatal care can improve maternal and infant health outcomes by ensuring timely interventions and follow-up care (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024).
In Bauchi State, despite the presence of nurse practitioners, postnatal care services are still underutilized and suboptimal in some areas. The extent of nurse practitioners’ impact in improving these services in Bauchi State, particularly in rural and underserved communities, is not fully understood. This study seeks to evaluate the role of nurse practitioners in enhancing postnatal care services in the region.
Postnatal care is essential for reducing maternal and infant mortality rates, yet many new mothers in Bauchi State continue to face challenges accessing quality care due to insufficient healthcare staff, cultural barriers, and limited healthcare infrastructure (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2023). Nurse practitioners, with their broad scope of practice, are well-positioned to play a pivotal role in improving postnatal services, yet the actual impact of their involvement in this context remains poorly explored.
Barriers such as insufficient training opportunities, resistance from other healthcare professionals, and low awareness of the role of NPs may hinder their potential to effectively contribute to postnatal care. This study aims to appraise the impact of nurse practitioners on postnatal care services and the challenges they face in Bauchi State.
This study will focus on postnatal care services in selected healthcare facilities in Bauchi State, where nurse practitioners are actively involved. Limitations may include variability in training levels among nurse practitioners and differences in healthcare infrastructure across regions.
